Dating back to the arrival of the popes in Avignon in the Middle Ages, wine growing has rapidly developed in the Rhône valley. The wines today have progressed and now occupy a major place among the best AOC (a French control certification) French wines. In 1966 Avignon became the capital city of Côtes du Rhône wines.
